4 Tips to Keep your Children Safe and Warm this Winter

4 tips to keep your children safe and warm this winter

With winter in full swing, I wanted to share some tips for parents, like you, to keep your children warm and safe this season.

  1. What to Wear

When dressing children for outdoor play or dropping them off at school, remember to dress them in layers and if possible use wool instead of cotton. Using wool absorbs water faster and keeps children dryer than cotton. A smart tip that I use is dressing babies and younger children with one more layer than an adult would in the winter.

  • Car Comfort

I know we as parents want to make sure our children are warm at all times, but it’s important to remember that their clothing shouldn’t be so tight that is restricts their movement. A perfect example would be placing children in a car seat – they should wear thin layers rather than bulky snow gear. For more information please read Winter Care Seat Safety Tips.

  • Sport Safety

Many children are ready to hit the ice and slopes when snowfall begins. Always supervise children during winter activities. Remember ice-skating should be allowed with an appropriate amount of ice that has passed inspection. When sledding make sure it is not too crowded and moving vehicles are not close to the playing area.

  • Driving Duties

As a parent, nanny, or babysitter – always make sure you have the necessary equipment in your vehicles when children are present. It’s important to expect the unexpected driving in snowy and cold conditions. Keep a first aid kit, ice scraper, extra clothing and blankets, flashlights, snacks, and hand warmers in the trunk of your vehicle to be ready for anything. I hope these tips are good refreshers for you to be prepared and ready for this winter season.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Have a safe and happy winter season.
